First week of Social Studies

I am looking forward to a busy and successful school year. I cannot believe I only have one more year to go before I began student teaching. I know this year will fly by, but I feel that I still have much to learn before I enter the classroom. This semester will have new challenges as well as benefits. For example, I never have used a blog or google community and I have only used tweet one time. I look forward to using new technology and experiencing new ways of communicating with people. Technology is expanding so rapidly by the time I have a class of my own there will probably be even more useful devices. According to NCTCS, teachers must be the leader in there classrooms. As future teachers it is up to us to know the technology and use it for the benefit of our students.
Speaking of technology, I want to thank Dr. Parker for providing many helpful videos for the first week of class. Without them, I would have been lost on what to do.
Another part of this week I enjoyed was the google community discussions. The preamble for social studies in North Carolina schools had several good quotes. I especially liked George Santayana quote, “those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” This quote is a good answer for anyone who would ask "Why should we learn about history." History is so fascinating. Just this past Saturday I went to the Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort which discussed the Appalachian history of North Carolina. Not only did I see antiques and read interesting information. The main concept of the museum is that it portray the determination of the backwoods settlers who learned to survive in rugged conditions. Determination is just one example of what social studies can teach students. I am so happy to be taking social studies this semester so I can learn how to present the information properly to my future students.

  1. Kelly,
I agree with your post. There are many technology uses this semester that I haven't utilized in the past, such as blogging, twitter, and google community. I also am finding these somewhat challenging. I do agree that as educators we will need to embrace these forms of technology in order to better serve our students. Good luck this semester.
