Welcome to Week 6
Hello Everyone,
This week, as a moderator for google community, my learning in the class has shifted to the differentiation discussion. Mallory brought up a great resource I had never heard of before called Spelling City. I have posted the link below for reference. Students have word list and assignments which can be assigned by the teacher. Teachers can add students names and assign each student different assignments and words according to student level. This makes differentiation for spelling easy. The Spelling City also allows students to practice other types of literacy such as vocabulary and phonics. Students can play games with what they have learned. There is a game called hang mouse where a mouse fills in the letters for a word at the command of the computer mouse. If the guess is incorrect the cat gets the mouse.

For my outside resource, my professor, Dr. McKinney, led her Fine Arts students to a great resource called NC Natural and Cultural Resources. The website has free eBooks for children and discusses North Carolina arts, history, libraries, and nature. This class is ideal for my unit plan in fourth grade since this grade studies North Carolina history. Students can learn about North Carolina as far back as the colonization to the information happening in our state today.

In connection with the NCTCS, the Spelling City and the North Carolina website focuses on standard 4, teachers facilitate learning in the classroom. Under the standard 4 requirements, teachers are to focus on differentiation and incorporating technology within the classroom. Students can do Spelling City on their eBook, a form of technology, while teachers can assign students to do different words depending on what level students are on. The North Carolina website is also a great technology tool because students can learn by using the eBooks and researching the website in general.
For my classroom, I will incorporate Spelling City. It is a fun technology resource which should provide students with some practice on spelling. Though our world today for the most part does not require spelling due to spell check on computers, it is crucial for students to know how to spell. What if our computers failed today. How many people would be able to write a complete sentence without a spelling error. If I am assigned to fourth grade, I will certainly be using the North Carolina website source. Students will be able to research about their state on this website inside and outside of class. Hopefully with this class they will learn how history can be fun. I will also be researching the website for some great ideas for lesson plans.
Thank you for reading my blog.
I hope you all have a good week.

Kelly, I loved what you and Chris had planned for the differentiation discussion this week. The resource that you said Mallory found is fantastic! I agree that without technology not many people would be successful in even writing a simple sentence. Also, isn't it wonderful when resources and information overlap between classes? I am very excited for you finding something so applicable to the unit you are creating! I also believe that you are absolutely capable of making history fun for the students, Kelly. Your mindset is wonderful.
ReplyDeleteKelly, I love the resource that you shared with us! That is an awesome way to differentiate for spelling in your classroom! The resource Dr. McKinney gave you is really cool as well. My unit is also 4th grade so I will use this resource to find things that go along with my standards. I agree that spelling is a very important thing to master at a young age because so many people cannot spell words properly because of today's technology resources. Overall, it sounds like you had a great week and I hope this next week treats you well.
ReplyDeleteSpelling City is a great resource - but, as we continue to move to an age of digital teaching and learning - how can spelling maintain its relevance in classrooms?
