Welcome to Week 11

I hope everyone has had a great weekend.

I am working on lesson plans for Social Studies and I am finding some great resources. I would encourage you to check out Mr. Betts Class on Youtube. The link is posted below. Mr. Bett has turned some great songs into paradodys by changing the lyrics. He sings about all kinds of history events from the lost colony of Roanoke, Jamestown, to the Leaders of World War 2. His songs would be a great way to conclude the lesson or begin the lesson to grab students interest.

In addressing what I have been doing outside of social studies, I had a wonderful experience in the classroom today. I taught a literacy lesson on a book about Sojourner Truth. She was a slave in the 1800s who was eventually freed. Her life was spent speaking against slavery and speaking for women's rights. I dressed up in a long dress pretending to be a good friend of Sojourner Truth. The students really enjoyed the lesson. I did receive some constructive criticism that I read too fast. However, overall the lesson was productive. I love being in the classroom. Every minute that I am in this enviroment is a learning experience for me. I learn so much simply by observing and listening.

In addressing the NCTCS, integrating Mr. Betts songs into a social studies lesson would be a part of teachers facilitate learning. Specifically, the teacher would use Mr. Betts song as a technology piece in her classroom. Students could watch the youtube video on their iPad or the teacher could show the video on her SMART Board.

For NCTCS standard four, teachers facilitate learning, would also connect with my fine arts lesson. Teachers must differentiate in the class for students to be successful in their learning material. As a future teacher, I need to be careful to respect all students learning abilities. For example, I need to be careful to read slower so that students who are not as quick to grasp information will have a better chance to process the material.

For my future classroom, I will incorporate Mr. Betts videos when I teach a history lesson. If students can go as far as memorizing the songs, since the songs do indeed have a catchy tune, they will have already memorized the material they need to know for the lesson. From my art integrated lesson, I need to be careful how fast I read when I integrate books into my lesson plan. For a person who LOVES to read children's books, I read fast. I do not want to exhibit this bad habit with the students.

"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." Galatians 6:9 (English Standard Version)

I wanted to put this verse out there. It is not my intention to take the verse out of context. I do believe God has placed a calling on every one of us to be some kind of worker. He has called us to be teachers. Teaching is His work, therefore let us not become weary and give up in the last weeks of the semester. Let us stand in the hope of the Lord and finish strong. We will reap the benefits if we do not lose heart.

  2. Kelly,
Thansk for sharing those resources! I enjoyed checking out Mr. Betts' Classroom. Mr. Betts' songs will help with Social Studies teaching, as well as fine arts standards that address musical knowledge. I love how encouraging your posts are. You lift my spirits whenever I read them. Thank you!

  3. Kelly,

This verse points out the perspective we all need to have for teaching! You are right - all of this work (and the work to come) will pay off!
