Welcome to Week 9

For social studies this week, I had a valuable experience with the App Evaluation. PlayKids Stories, the app Chris and I chose, provides a fun experience for students. Students not only have access to a wide variety of Ebooks, but they can interact with different books by playing games. There is one book about planets where students can put clothes on the different planets. By having an interactive experience with science, students can remember the material and the experience when learning about information in class. Also, students will develop better reading skills. With a fun app like this, who could not learn how to love reading.
For information learned outside of class, I have been studying about Hispanic culture in the classroom. As a teacher, I need to establish respect for cultural diversity by choosing a wide variety of books about different cultural groups.  I found a variety of Spanish books I can use in my classroom. The legend of the Poinsettia would be a good Hispanic book I could use for Christmas time. "To many Tamales" and "New Shoes for Silvia" are two great books which share Hispanic cultures. By having a variety of books in the classroom to represent every culture, students will understand the value of respecting diversity in the world. Below is a link which shares a list of books related to the Hispanic culture.

The stories app applies to the standard four, "teachers facilitate learning," because teachers integrate technology inside the classroom. Teachers must evaluate the app to make sure it is acceptable for students to view then apply the app in the classroom for students to use.
As for respecting diversity in the classroom, standard two for NCTCS would be the perfect choice for this learning experience. Teachers must create a learning environment in which students from other cultures must feel at home and at ease in the class. Students from different cultures will feel more comfortable with learning and associating with their peers and teacher.
How will I incorporate the material into my classroom? If I receive a younger grade for teaching, I will be using the play kids story apps in my classroom. Though this app is only useful for grades K-2, students who are in the beginning stages of reading will enjoy the app with its interactive games and audio reading. As for cultural diversity, I will take this topic seriously in the classroom. Far too often, children who are different from English speaking children only because they come from another country are harassed and teased in schools. By incorporating a variety of books about Hispanic students and others who are from a different country, I will hopefully create an atmosphere of respect for the cultural groups in my classroom.

  1. Kelly, I also did my app evaluation this week and researched a great math app that is fun for students but also beneficial. Playkids stories sounds like a great app that students would really enjoy and benefit from. I love that you are researching about culture diversity for your outside learning because I am also doing that for one of my PDP goals. Researching different activities and tools that we can use to include our culturally diverse students will be very beneficial to us when we become teachers because I am sure we will have at least one student from a different culture each year in our class.

  2. Kelly, I really like the app you shared! It seems like it would be very engaging to students and get them involved in their learning while building reading skills. I think it's great that you are finding books to support cultural diversity in your classroom. Students come from unique backgrounds and should feel represented within their classroom to feel comfortable. Hope you enjoy spring break!

  3. Kelly, the app that you shared sounds really neat because not only is it a good way to have literacy lessons in the classroom, but you are also incorporating technology which is really important for today's students. Diversity is also really important in our classroom, and I like your ideas of putting Hispanic heritage books in the classroom.

  4. Kelly, great job this week on your diversity presentation. Classrooms in the past twenty years around the country have become quite diverse. As teachers we need to meet the needs of all our students. Kelly, I think it is really great that you are already looking for resources for your future Hispanic students. I think it's important to introduce your students to other cultures.

  5. Kelly, I am so glad to see that you have already learned the importance of not just finding technology but being intentional about how the technology could positively impact your students' learning! Closing this loop is the key (and an area that teachers often neglect).
