Blog 2 for EDU 435 and SED 330
Hello, Everyone.
I hope all of you are having a good week.
I am so thankful Gardner-Webb's program allows me to build a relationship with my CE and my students before I start student teaching in the classroom. I was able to see the students come into the door of their classroom bright and early Monday morning. They are cute little first graders. Some were shy yet others were excited. If I did not learn anything else this week, it was helping students get the jitters out. One little girl was so upset that she was leaving her Mom. My CE mentioned that she had some stuffed animals who were lonely and needed some love. The little girl selected a Clifford stuffed animal which she held during class all day long. I will definitely use that technique when I get my class. My proud moment for the week was that today I found out what content I will teach for the five lessons which I need to give in October. I was happy to know what pathway I will be heading with those lessons since it is a big part of my assignment for 435.
My biggest struggle this week is getting into a school routine. There are so many things I need to attend to. I want to do them all at once, but of course, that is impossible. I am sure within the next few weeks that I will get more established within the course work and have an objective in mind for what I will be doing.
The work which brought me the most satisfaction this week is learning about the scientific phenomenon. I did really believe that people did not see phenomenon every day, but miraculous science wonders are all around us. As future science teachers, we have to know when to look for them so that we can appreciate the beauty.
Action steps which I want to complete over the next week are the science fair project which my group is working on. I would like to try the experiment which will be about magnetism. I look forward to sharing my results with you in another blog. I will also continue to work on my checklist and classroom management portfolio for 435. My contribution to the classroom this week was communication with my colleagues on the science fair project. I worked with everyone on when to meet. I helped my team look at standards and projects appropriate for fourth to sixth-grade level. In my belief, nothing is ever the best. Anything can be improved on. My commitment next week is to help my group with the science fair project and to do whatever I can do to speed up the work.
For the outside learning, I have been looking at different science apps for students. One app I found is called Science4us for the elementary level. Students are able to learn about physical, inquiry, life, and earth science by looking at videos and playing games on their Ipads. For my future classroom, I could connect this app with a lesson I teach about science. Students could do work on the app as an assessment so I could see what they have learned.

Another outside resource I have looked into books for the first day of school. My CE chose a book called David Goes to School by David Shannon and First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg. I am trying to find more books for different grade levels which I can go too when I begin to teach school. Please read the First Day Jitters book. The story is about a person who is scared to go to school. Her Dad forces her to go. At the very end of the book, the author reveals that the person is not a child, but actually a TEACHER. The first week is so important. Though students do not learn as much, the first week can be a strong foundation with the right teacher to manage the classroom. Students will know more about their teacher and the expectations which they must perform in class. Please look at the below website for more information about books used in the first days of the class.

My first tweet is about the SAMR acronym which we learned last year in social studies. As in comparison with the different technologies and how far an educator can go with them, a person is standing on the beach wondering what is in the ocean. He takes small steps until the last step is the mini-sub exploring the ocean. Therefore, instead of standing on the side and looking at the technology we should be exploring the ocean of technology.
Tweet two, above, is about Kids Discover website. This is a great website for social studies and science learning. After I clicked on the little bubbles, the website took me to a section of the desired topics such as the human body, geography, space station, world figures, and technology. When clicking on one of these main areas, there are smaller sub subjects for the field of interest. Check out the website below.

Please check out this great website. Who would think I could learn classroom strategies from watching Mary Poppins, but there are fourteen tips for how to manage students within this website. Tips such as being prepared, show support and being kind, but firm are just a few of the useful classroom strategies on the website.
For scientific thinking of the week, I am watching and learning about the horrific hurricane which is causing devastation to the south eastern part of Texas, and southern Lousiana. Though scientific wonders are amazing, some can be terrible. With thousands of people homeless, rain has continued to fall consistently. A component of science which connects with a hurricane is the cause and effect relationship. A hurricane was formed in the ocean and slowly headed toward the coast. The effect is flooding because the land is so flat.
For NCTCS, I would choose standard one, teachers are leaders in their field. For example, teachers seek out the material and the resources which will benefit their student's learning abilities. To illustrate, the science app is a good resource which I can use in the classroom. If I teach older grades, showing students about the hurricane would be beneficial for them so they can connect science with the outside world. Also, teachers facilitate learning, standard four, by integrating technology into the classroom such as the science app and the Kids Discovery website.
In making connections with my work, I can group all of these resources together to make lesson plans regardless of whether I am teaching science, math, social studies, or literacy. I can use the Science4rus plus technology for lessons. For the literacy component, I am already making a list of books which I can read to students on the first day of school.
In reflecting on the information I have learned, I must confess my mind is on overflow. My CE is very helpful to me in the first week of school. I have learned about different books and resources for what is best to give children on the first week of school. These books would go for any of the lower grades. I have also learned about Kids' Discovery, Science4rus app, and classroom management skills in my classroom. My CE is also putting together a math folder for me so that I can have master copies of the first-grade material. She is so wonderful!
Fortunately, every time I walk through the school doors, I know I am already preparing for my future classroom. Though the material I teach may be different, classroom management strategies and ways to teach will be the same. I plan to incorporate science information such as the app in my classroom along with Kids Discover. This website is designed for students. I also would like to integrate the first day of school books into my classroom to help with the students' jitters of coming into a new grade.
I hope all of you have a great week.

Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI have already found this experience of "pre-student teaching" to be incredibly beneficial! I feel wiped and overwhelmed, but I'm glad I'm feeling this NOW as oppose to next January. Almost every teacher I've met has said that it's great we are getting a year-long experience and they've said how they wish they would have gotten the same opportunity! So, I'm very thankful 435 allows us to do so.
I had never thought about the principles of Mary Poppins until I read that article! It was fun to read through and also related to my article from edutopia about being kind! I think this is important for adults to remember too. Your posts are also so uplifting and informative, Kelly and I really want you to know that is appreciated. Great job! I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
Kelly,
ReplyDeleteI also am very greatful that Gardner-Webb afforded us the possibility of a year long student teaching experience. This week I was able to meet the students during the first day of school and am beginning to get to know my students and their interests. This is shaping up to be a great semester with so many learning experiences. You also make a great example of phenomena. Hurricanes can be awe inspiring and at the same time so destructive and devastating. Hurricane Harvey was so destructive, not because of wind damage but the massive amounts of flooding in Texas. We certainly learn so much from science all around us. Have a great week. Chris
Getting into the routine is really tough, and tiring! The current student teachers are really finding out how exhausting this whole teaching things really is. I'm so glad we are able to give you this opportunity, too.
ReplyDeleteKelly, I am glad YOU see the value of getting into the classroom. Maintain this mindset and GROW as much as you can. Thanks for following the checkbric!
