Welcome to Week 10

Hello, everyone. I hope all of you had a wonderful spring vacation.

For my social studies experience this week, I thoroughly enjoyed the Children's Literature project. I selected a book concerning the creation of the US Constitution. The book connects with grade level five because it introduces an important document which has shaped the US History.  One of my goals this summer is to create a website which would list all the books I own. I would give a description of the book along with how I could use the book in my classroom. I am glad for the Children's Literature project because it has given me a guideline of how to create the book website.

Outside of the social studies class, my clinical educator showed me a unique technology app which I had never heard of before. The name of the app is called pic collage. With this app, students can create a poster on their apple device filled with pictures and phrases in relation to what they have learned from the lesson. The app not only inspires creativity among the students but it helps them to put what they remembered about the lesson into the poster.

For the NCTCS, "teachers facilitate learning" would correspond to the pic collage app. Standard four emphasizes the use of technology to help students with projects in the classroom. By using the pic collage, students will be engaged because it is a creative website to explain what information they have learned. As for selecting books, standard three, "teachers know the content they teach," would be most appropriate. In the Children's Literature activity this week, we needed to select a book which was appropriate for the standard selected.

For my future classroom,  I will utilize the pic collage and Lynne Cheney's books. Students can create a poster of something they have learned about and add important words, phrases, and pictures onto their iPad.  As for books, my goal is to gather a large list of children's authors for student teaching. Lynne Cheney has excellent books which can be used from the 3rd to 5th-grade level. Some of them are as follows: "Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America," "A is for Abigal: An Almanac of Amazing American Women," "America, a Patriotic Primer," and "When Washington Crossed the Deleware." If I begin at an upper elementary grade level, I want to have all of those books in my classroom. Each book discusses important facts of American History.

  1. Kelly,
I hope you had a great vacation, too. I am also glad that we are doing this project because it allows us to have a multitude of resources from our peers. It is a great thing that we are able to share what we find. It cuts down the work time for sure. The idea about a children's lit website is a great one. When you get that up and running, make sure to send me the link. Great job, Kelly!!

  2. Kelly,
I hope you really enjoyed your Spring Break too! I am actually familiar with the pic collage app but I never thought of using it in the classroom. I can see how it could be useful for creating electronic posters and adding collages into presentations. I will definitely think of using that in my future classroom!

  3. Kelly, As always you seem to be on top of your game. I congratulate you on this. I really enjoyed your Children's Literature book choice. I must say it help sway me on my choice. Originally I was going to chose Flat Stanley's Mount Rushmore but I found his Captial book much more diverse. It contained so many different characters, places, events, and details on American History. With such a vast resource what future teacher could resist. I looked at your app. for pic collage it seemed like it would work well in the classroom. I may have to take some time on our next break and practice a little using it.

  4. I am glad you see the value of children's literature. It is important for us all to realize the power that children's literature can bring to the classroom. Keep on gathering books for your own classroom library and developing instruction that aligns with the books.
