Welcome to Week 3
Week 3 has been very beneficial to me in learning about generalizations and conceptual lens. These are two terms I have never heard of before. Conceptual lens ties two concepts together which forms a generalization. I want my unit to focus on the American Revolutionary war, therefore, a few of my concepts I selected are War versus Peace and Liberty versus Tyranny. "How can rebellion bring about liberty" might be a generalization I would use.
I interviewed one of my teachers for the wisdom and experience project. She is one of the few teachers who tries to incorporate social studies into her material. She did explain how difficult it was to incorporate social studies in the class since there is no allotted time for it. The only time she can make for the subject is if she uses social studies facts in literacy lessons. According to the NCTCS teachers need to know the content they teach. To be a good teacher, I will need to know my content extremely well to incorporate social studies in with core math and reading.
In my spare time, I love to read children's books. There is a great series good for the upper elementary grades called "I Survive Series". Each book focuses on a child who went through a traumatic experience. For example, there is a story about Hurricane Katrina, Nazi Invasion, Mount Vesuvius eruption, and the Chicago Fire. Though these books have fictional characters the author Lauren Tarshis is careful to keep the books historically accurate. These books are excellent resources to further a student's knowledge in social studies. Students can read a thrilling story while learning new information. If I do teach upper-grade levels, I will definitely be recommending these books to my students.

Kelly, I too had never gained an understanding of the words conceptual lens and generalizations. I am glad that Social Studies methods has taught us both what they are and how to create them! I love your unit idea I think war is a very good idea and I love your comparison of war vs peace. That is awesome you interviewed a teacher who incorporates social studies into their instruction. I hope you learned a lot from your teacher that you can use in your future classroom. Its good to see other classmates learning as they go as well. Great post!
ReplyDeleteKelly, these words were new to me also! I'm glad to hear you are already taking what you've learned and applying it to your unit, those are great ideas! Also, I'm glad you've found a teacher that incorporates SS into their teaching even when there is no time specifically allotted for it. Another great point is that we will need to know our content very well to do this. In our classrooms we will have to be able to integrate social studies in where it fits and makes sense to our students. Great post!
ReplyDeleteKelly,
ReplyDeleteI am glad to see that this week has been beneficial to you. In future blogs, be sure you fully elaborate on the points within the checkbric so I can connect to your thinking. What outside research did you complete this week? How can the connection to your future classroom be stronger?
Kelly, I really love the topic Revolutionary War. Your choice for the conceptual lens is very fitting. The colonies suffering from the tyranny of England and their fight for liberation. I think incorporating the "I Survived" books is a nice touch. It also looks like you've already done your research on these books. Great job.
